Random rubble(RR) masonry is a construction technique where the stones are arranged randomly and there are no regular courses of uniform height. Generally, 6”- 9” stones can be used at the construction sites either hammer-dressed or chisel-dressed. It’s most suitable for the construction of a foundation. This type of stone masonry is used for residential buildings, go-downs, boundary walls, etc. Boundary walls are made of RR for aesthetic purposes.
Typically RR masonry is constructed with stones of various sizes such that gaps between large stones are filled up with smaller stones and the remaining spaces are filled by the binding agent [cement: sand motor in 1:5 ratio respectively] Before the RR construction, rubble stones should be cleaned and ensured that they are sound enough and not deteriorated.
Tooth stones were used for extension and between layers. Big boulders were broken to adequate sizes.
